PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide developed as a derivative of Melatonan II a tanning agent first studied in the 1980s. Unlike its parent compound, PT-141 was refined specifically for its effects on sexual desire and arousal.  In 2019, the FDA approved PT-141 under the trade name Vyleesi® for treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.  By acting on the brain, PT-141 helps restore the psychological component of arousal, which PDE-5 inhibitors cannot address.
